17 Ideas for Capturing Couple Time This Fall

Fall inspires romance doesn’t it? Seems like love is in the air everywhere you turn. The cooler weather makes it ideal for snuggling up closer to the one you love. The changing colors are a good excuse to go for a drive or a walk and enjoy some time together. Those are just a couple of the more popular ways to capture couple time this fall, but there are others. Here’s some ideas inspired from my own experiences as well as from articles I’ve read (and noted herein) written by fellow Families.com bloggers. Passing Time at Patches, Orchards, and Farms … Continue reading

Ghoulish Good Times In Chicago

I’ve told you where you can get your scare on in the Windy City, but if you have younger ghosts and goblins you’ll want to haunt more kid-friendly events. If you live anywhere near Chicago I would highly recommend attending some of the following family friendly Halloween-related events. Last weekend, we went to Pumpkinpalooza where my 3-year-old daughter had a blast painting pumpkins, creating Native-American crafts, decorating wooden bats, feeding llamas, and gorging herself on Halloween candy… all in 88 degree weather. (Now that’s freaky!) We can’t wait to get to attend these events: TERRORIFIC THURSDAY For city kids who … Continue reading

Where You Can Chuck A Pumpkin Without Getting Arrested

Tis the season to chuck pumpkins. Unfamiliar with the sport? I was too until I saw an episode of Food Network’s All-American Festivals that spotlighted the wonders of pumpkins. For all you pumpkin-loving people who thought the orange fruit was only good for pies, breads, and to decorate your porch during the month of October—-think again. Each year thousands travel to various parts of the country to watch grown men (and in some cases women and small children) hurl the popular autumn fruit into the sky at speeds that exceed 300 mph using a 30,000-pound cannon. It’s called pumpkin chucking … Continue reading

More Spooktacular Halloween Travel Destinations

Forget about New Year’s Eve or Thanksgiving, for some folks Halloween is the most cherished holiday of the year. Personally, I tend to shy away from events where costumed creatures make it their personal mission to make visitors lose their voices from screaming and their lunches from pure fright. But, for others getting their scare on is a part of what makes October such a memorable part of the year. In my previous blog I listed Halloween happenings taking place in California and Arkansas. In this blog I’m spanning the country to find other haunting good times. Take a look: … Continue reading

Spooktacular Halloween Travel Destinations

How’s this for a freaky Halloween-related trip… this weekend my family traveled to a pumpkin patch and picked gourds, Indian corn and pumpkins in 87 degree heat… and we didn’t have to travel to Hawaii to do so. We went pumpkin picking in Wisconsin where the average temperature this time of year is 62. Wearing shorts in a pumpkin patch in the Upper Midwest during the month of October on day with temperatures 25 degrees above normal—-now that’s freaky. I plan to write about our pumpkin picking adventures in depth in a future blog, but for now I figured it … Continue reading

Get Ready For The “Carnival of Carnage”

It’s that time of year again… Madness, mayhem and horror are being unleashed at Universal Orlando Resort’s Halloween Horror Nights. Billed as the largest, most intense Halloween event in the country, the annual seasonal celebration is expected to draw record crowds this year. A warning to parents with young children the event is not for the faint of heart (or the child that experiences regular nightmares). However, if you have teens that enjoy having the Halloween stuffing scared out of them then pack your bags now. Universal says this year Halloween Horror Nights is the most extreme, fear-filled event in … Continue reading

How The Weather Will Affect Your Fall Leaf Peeping Trips

Perhaps, I am just naïve. After all, I grew up in a place where the only things that fell from trees were coconuts. So when it comes to judging the brilliance of fall foliage I may be a bit out of my league. Personally, I think the mere fact that the leaves changes hues at all is exciting and amazing. However, it seems other more astute leaf peepers have different ideas on what constitutes a prize-winning season. Experts in the Midwest and South are warning travelers who are criss-crossing the nation in search of the ultimate fall foliage that they … Continue reading

More Places To Take Your Little Ghosts And Goblins For Some Safe Halloween Fun

Now I’ve done it. Yesterday I posted a blog with a picture of my daughter wearing her very first Halloween costume. She happened to catch sight of the photo featuring her in the spotted Dalmatian creation and insisted I get it out of the closet for her. She then spent the better part of the day trying to squeeze her 3-year-old body into the costume she wore when she was a year old. Never mind that we have her new costume for this year, which fits just fine. No, she wanted to be a pooch–the power of suggestion! If you … Continue reading

Where To Take Your Little Ghosts And Goblins For Some Safe Halloween Fun

My 3-year-old daughter has only gone trick-or-treating twice in her entire life. The first time she went dressed as a Dalmatian and last year she was a giraffe. If you are anything like me disappoint sets in quickly about an hour after your child returns from gathering his/her goodies. What a shame that the costume you dropped $50 on (or spent 30 hours sewing) only gets to be used for a few hours on Halloween night. (Sure, there’s always the chance to show them off at various Halloween parties and you could leave them out for your child to play … Continue reading

More Fun Fall Activities For Families With Children

The countdown to Halloween is on (at least in our home). This weekend I noticed our local supermarket put up its “Fall Harvest” section and stocked it with pumpkins, squash, and Indian corn. However, if your family is like mine you are able to bypass these sections in the grocery store by visiting a local pumpkin patch and harvesting your own fall finds. In a previous blog I listed some of the most popular pumpkin farm/family activity areas near where we live in the Midwest. If you reside in Wisconsin, Illinois, or Indiana (or happen to be visiting these states … Continue reading
